WAIHEKE CHORAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER FEB/MARCH 2007

Hi Everyone,

Sadly our holidays are now over and we are well and truly back into business and the running of the two choirs and their various activities. We had a great turn out of members and prospective members at our first meeting of the year. We all enjoyed catching up on the previous six weeks, having a cup of tea and a bite to eat from the great selection of cakes and nibbles provided by members. Richard gave us a run down on the proposed activities for the coming year and we closed with a song. We are now back to our weekly meetings, same time, same place.

At our first committee meeting for the year, plans were discussed and set loosely in place. Dates can never be set in stone as outside events take over and change everything. However you will be kept informed of changes, if any, as they take place.

A brief mention of events in the last few weeks of the year. Last year was the 30th Anniversary of the choir. The grant we received for this event was applied to “Iolanthe,” which we performed in November. The choir was originally started late in 1976,so we have decided to extend our celebrations musically through the year 2007. A Cappella performed a Christmas celebration at St. Peters Church, with Sister Shout, and we had our fantastic Christmas Bash at the Golf Club. Poor old Santa, at our first Christmas party he lost his trousers, and at this Christmas do – his suit didn’t even turn up! I’m on to it Andy for this year.

Upcoming Events.

We are going to have a bit of social fund raising this year. So at some time during the year we are planning a trip to the cinema to see ‘As it is in Heaven’, a concert by Richard and Mary and Friends and a raffle. Contributions will be very welcome for the raffle when needed. Our production for this year is ‘ The King and I’ a very well known and popular musical. We have had our first rehearsal and as the music is very familiar we had no trouble with it, indeed most of us knew both words and music. I don’t think there will be any groans when we are told ‘scripts down.’ A show committee has been formed and will have its first meeting on Feb.26th.Philip is checking dates with Artworks for the middle of the year. Again .the Panto is on around that time , so we cannot give you any dates yet. A Cappella will be starting shortly and you will be advised of the starting date. We are also looking at doing a concert singing the favourite numbers from the past thirty years of shows much later on in the year. Well these are the plans for the year at the moment. We might not be able to fit it all in , but we will give it a good try.

AGM

The AGM will be held on March 13th. 7.30pm at Palm Beach hall. It is a normal rehearsal night and we would like to conclude it as soon as possible so we can get on and sing. It has been advertised in the Gulf News and the Market Place. We need committee members and a President. Please consider it, we are a very easy group to work with.

A very warm welcome to the new members who have joined us and we hope you really enjoy the company, and a very special welcome to Andys mother who is out here for a few weeks, no doubt having a fabulous time with Andy and Meya.

We don’t often have to farewell members of the choir, but we are saying goodbye to Jill Tetley and Steve ,who are leaving the Island for other parts. Jill has been a very loyal and supportive member of the choir for quite a few years and Steve has quietly beavered away helping with all sorts of jobs at our shows. We are not the only ones on the Island who will miss them. So, all the best for the future. Jill and Steve, and don’t lose touch with us.

A very happy birthday to Rosemary Burns who had a birthday in February ,and to Pat Atkin ,Jill Tetley, Barbara Cuff and Christine Hoffman who have birthdays in March.

Photographs , DVD’s ,and CD’s of Iolanthe will be available shortly and many thanks to the Tysoe family for this. There is a list available at choir if you wish to purchase any.
